Psalms 89:20

Listen to this article

“I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him.”

Context:The context of this verse is essential for understanding its significance. Psalm 89 as a whole reflects on the covenant that God made with David, promising to establish his dynasty forever (2 Samuel 7:12-16). However, the psalmist is now lamenting because it seems that God has rejected or forgotten his promise (verses 38-45).

1. David as God’s servant:In this verse, the psalmist declares that God has found David, his servant. David was chosen by God to be the king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:12-13). Despite David’s flaws and shortcomings, he was known as a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22). The phrase “my servant” reflects the close relationship between David and God and implies David’s faithfulness to God’s commands.

2. Anointing with holy oil:Anointing with oil was a common practice in the Old Testament, symbolizing the consecration and empowerment of individuals for specific roles and tasks. In this case, God anointed David with holy oil, signifying his selection as king and the pouring out of God’s Spirit upon him (1 Samuel 16:13). The anointing set David apart as the chosen one, empowering him to fulfill his kingly duties.

3. Messianic implications:While the immediate context of Psalm 89 refers to David, this verse also carries messianic implications. The anointing of David foreshadows the anointing of the future Messiah, Jesus Christ. Jesus, a descendant of David, fulfills the promises made to David and establishes an eternal kingdom (Luke 1:32-33). He is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s covenant with David.
