Psalms 89:20

I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:

Psalms 89:20 (KJV)

Psalm 89 is a song about God’s covenant with David. The psalmist remembers the promise that David’s dynasty would last forever (2 Samuel 7:12-16). Yet later in the psalm, he laments that God seems to have rejected that promise (verses 38-45). Verse 20 stands as a firm reminder of God’s original commitment, even when present circumstances appear to contradict it.

God says, “I have found David my servant.” This shows God’s sovereign choice. David did not make himself king; God selected him from among the people (1 Samuel 16:12-13). The anointing with holy oil set David apart for a sacred purpose. It was not just a ceremony; the Spirit of the Lord came upon him (1 Samuel 16:13). This anointing was both a consecration and an empowerment for the role of king.

  • David as God’s servant: The title “my servant” shows a close relationship and David’s faithfulness to God’s commands.

  • Anointing with holy oil: This symbolized consecration and empowerment for the role of king.

  • Messianic implications: David’s anointing points to Jesus Christ, the ultimate Anointed One, who fulfills the Davidic covenant (Luke 1:32-33).

God still chooses and equips people for His purposes. When He calls someone, He also provides what is needed. Even when circumstances seem to contradict God’s promises, His covenant stands firm. Believers can trust that God’s plans are not defeated by present troubles. The same God who anointed David is at work today, consecrating His people for His glory.

This verse encourages confidence in God’s faithfulness. It also calls for humility, since service begins with God’s finding, not human achievement. God’s choice is not based on human merit but on His own purpose. As you consider your own life, remember that God sees and calls those He has prepared. His anointing brings both responsibility and assurance.
