Psalms 94:6

Posted on 18 May at 15:14
Listen to this article

“They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.”

Context:Psalm 94 is classified as a lament psalm, in which the psalmist expresses his distress and cries out to God for justice against the wicked. It begins with an invocation to God as the avenger of the righteous and ends with a declaration of trust in God’s judgment.

Understanding the verse:

  • “They”:Refers to the wicked or evildoers who are the subject of the psalmist’s complaint.
  • “Slay”:Means to kill or murder.
  • “The widow and the stranger”:These are vulnerable and marginalized groups in society. Widows were often left without protection or support, and strangers (foreigners or immigrants) were also vulnerable due to their unfamiliarity with the land and lack of social connections.
  • “Fatherless”:Refers to orphaned children who have lost their fathers and are therefore without the care and guidance that a father would provide.

Analysis and Application:

  • In this verse, the psalmist highlights the unjust and violent acts committed by the wicked. They not only disregard God’s commandments but also prey upon the most vulnerable members of society.
  • This verse draws attention to the importance of justice and compassion. God cares deeply for the widow, the stranger, and the fatherless, and He expects His people to demonstrate the same care and protection for them.
  • As believers, we are called to emulate God’s character by defending the rights of the vulnerable and seeking justice for those who are oppressed. This includes showing love and support to widows, strangers, and orphans, and standing against any form of injustice or violence.
  • Additionally, this verse serves as a reminder that God sees and knows all. Even if the wicked seem to escape human justice, they will ultimately face God’s judgment. We can take comfort in knowing that God is the righteous judge who will hold evildoers accountable.
  • Read the entire Psalm 94 to gain a broader understanding of the psalmist’s plea for justice and his trust in God’s sovereignty.
  • Study other passages in the Bible that speak about God’s concern for the widow, the stranger, and the fatherless. For example, explore Exodus 22:22-24, Deuteronomy 10:18, and James 1:27.
  • Reflect on how you can practically demonstrate God’s love and justice by reaching out to those who are vulnerable in your community and advocating for social justice.

Remember, the Bible is a rich source of wisdom and guidance. Take time to study and meditate on its teachings, seeking to apply its principles in your life.
