Psalms 102:17
He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.
Psalms 102:17 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 102 is a lament of an afflicted person who pours out their heart to God in deep distress. The psalmist speaks of anguish and helplessness, yet also trusts in God’s faithfulness and eternal nature. This verse stands within that prayer as a firm declaration of God’s compassion toward the needy.
Meaning
The verse begins, “He will regard the prayer of the destitute.” The word “destitute” in Hebrew points to a low shrub or plant, like a “heath in the wilderness” (Jeremiah 17:6). It describes someone brought low, afflicted, and without strength. The psalmist affirms that God pays attention to such a person’s cry.
The verse continues, “and not despise their prayer.” God does not reject or disdain the plea of the humble. He does not measure a prayer by the worthiness or status of the one who prays. Instead, He welcomes the cries of the broken and responds according to His perfect will.
Biblical connections
This promise echoes the wider teaching of Scripture that God draws near to the lowly. The same Hebrew term for “destitute” appears in Jeremiah 17:6 to picture a person who trusts in human strength rather than in the Lord. Here, the psalmist turns the image around: the one who is low before God finds that God hears him. The ancient versions translate this word as “poor” or “humble,” showing that God’s care reaches both the poor in spirit and the poor in purse.
Application
God is attentive to the prayers of His people, especially those in desperate need. This truth encourages us to approach Him confidently, knowing He will not turn away from our heartfelt cries.
His love and compassion extend to every situation. He invites us to bring our needs, struggles, and burdens before Him in prayer.
As believers, we can find comfort and hope in knowing that God regards and accepts our prayers. Prayer is not a futile exercise but a powerful means of communication with our heavenly Father. We can trust that He hears us, understands our needs, and responds according to His perfect wisdom and timing.
Reflection
No matter how desperate or lowly our circumstances, God invites us to approach Him in prayer. He will not despise or disregard our pleas. His compassionate nature assures us that the cries of the destitute reach His throne and move His heart.
