Psalms 103:20

Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

Psalms 103:20 (KJV)

Psalm 103 is a song of praise written by King David. He begins by thanking God for personal mercy and forgiveness, then calls on all creation to join in worship. In this verse, David speaks directly to angels, inviting them to bless the Lord. The following verses continue this call, extending it to all God’s hosts and all His works, and end with David again urging his own soul to bless the Lord.

Angels are spiritual beings created by God to serve and worship Him. They are described as excelling in strength, meaning they are mighty and powerful. Yet their power is not used for their own glory. They use it to do God’s commandments and to hearken to the voice of His word. To hearken means to listen carefully and obey. Angels show perfect attention to God’s voice and swift obedience to His will. Their strength is not independent; it is always directed by God’s command.

This verse shows that even the strongest heavenly beings are subject to God’s word. Their obedience is not forced but joyful. The psalmist calls them to bless the Lord, showing that worship and obedience belong together. Angels serve as messengers and agents of God throughout Scripture, but here their chief duty is praise. Their example reminds us that true strength is found in humble submission to God. The call to bless the Lord is not limited to angels; it extends to all His works, inviting every part of creation to join in praise.

Believers can learn from the angels’ example. We are called to listen carefully to God’s word and obey His commands without hesitation. Just as angels excel in strength, we can draw strength from God to do what He asks. Our worship should be joined with obedience, for blessing the Lord means more than singing praise; it means living according to His will. When we obey promptly, we reflect the angels’ devotion and honor God in our daily lives.

Consider how you listen to God’s voice. Do you obey promptly, or do you delay? The angels do not question or resist; they respond at once. Let their devotion inspire you to trust God’s word and follow it faithfully. When you bless the Lord with your words and your life, you join the angels and all creation in honoring Him.
