Psalms 103:20

Listen to this article

“Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.”

1. Context of Psalm 103: Psalm 103 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving written by King David. It is a beautiful expression of David’s gratitude to God for His abundant blessings, mercy, and forgiveness. The psalm begins with David praising the Lord for His personal benefits and continues with a call to all creation to join him in blessing and worshiping the Lord.

2. The Role of Angels: In Psalm 103:20, David specifically addresses the angels, calling them to bless the Lord. Angels are celestial beings created by God to serve and worship Him. They are mighty and powerful, excelling in strength. Their primary purpose is to carry out God’s commands and serve as messengers between God and humanity. Angels are often portrayed as messengers, protectors, and agents of God’s divine intervention throughout the Bible.

3. Obedience of Angels: The verse highlights the obedience of angels to God’s commands and their attentiveness to the voice of His word. Angels are depicted as loyal and obedient beings, always ready to carry out God’s will. They hearken to God’s voice and swiftly execute His commands without hesitation. Their obedience is a testament to their devotion and submission to God’s authority.

4. Application for Believers: Though this verse specifically addresses angels, there are lessons that can be applied to believers as well. We can learn from the angels’ obedience and attentiveness to God’s voice. As believers, we are called to submit to God’s authority, listen to His word, and follow His commands. Just as the angels excel in strength, we can draw strength from God to fulfil the tasks He has assigned us.

5. Worship and Praise: This verse also emphasises the importance of worship and praise. David calls upon the angels to join him in blessing the Lord. It reminds us that all of creation, both heavenly and earthly, is invited to offer worship and praise to God. As believers, we are encouraged to join in this exaltation of God, acknowledging His greatness, faithfulness, and sovereignty.
