Psalms 107:27

They reele to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man; and are at their wits end. Psalms 107:27 (KJV)

Psalm 107 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God for His deliverance and mercy, and it recounts a series of situations in which God rescues His people from distress. In verses 26‑27 the psalmist vividly describes the plight of those who find themselves in a tumultuous condition. The phrase “they reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man” paints a picture of individuals who are disoriented, unstable, and unable to find their footing, much as a drunk person loses control.

The addition “and are at their wit’s end” (or “wits’ end”) further emphasizes their desperation. They have reached the limit of their understanding, resources, and ability to deal with the situation. In this state they are completely helpless, with no clear way to navigate the challenges before them.

This description serves as a powerful reminder of human frailty and the reality that there are circumstances beyond our control and comprehension. No matter how capable or resourceful we may be, certain situations leave us feeling helpless and at a loss.

The surrounding verses reveal a repeated pattern: when the people cry out to the Lord in their trouble, He delivers them. Verse 28‑29 states, “Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. And he maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.” God is presented as the ultimate source of help and deliverance.

When we find ourselves reeling and staggering like a drunken man, and when we reach our wit’s end, the psalm points us to turn to God. By crying out to Him in our distress we can trust that He will intervene, calm the storms of life, and bring peace and stillness to the tumultuous waves.

Thus Psalm 107:27 reminds us to rely on God, to seek His guidance and intervention in every aspect of our lives, and to trust in His wisdom, strength, and faithfulness even when circumstances seem insurmountable. Even in our most desperate moments, we can find hope and deliverance through a relationship with the Lord.
