Psalms 107:22
And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thankesgiuing: and declare his workes with reioycing. Psalms 107:22 (KJV)
Psalm 107 is a hymn of praise and thanksgiving that celebrates God’s goodness, mercy, and deliverance in many circumstances. Verse 22 calls the people to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and to proclaim God’s works with joy. In the Old Testament, thanksgiving offerings were a type of peace offering that could include animals such as bulls or sheep together with unleavened bread and cakes, as described in Leviticus 7:11‑15. While the ancient ritual involved animal sacrifice, the emphasis of the psalmist is on presenting heartfelt gratitude and praise as offerings to God.
Declaring His works means openly testifying to God’s miracles, faithfulness, and deliverance in our lives. The verse urges believers to share these testimonies, making known what God has done for individuals and the community. Rejoicing accompanies this proclamation; it is an outward expression of the inner joy that arises from recognizing God’s blessings.
The broader context of Psalm 107 recounts various situations of distress—wandering in the desert, imprisonment, sickness, and storm‑tossed seas—where God rescued His people when they cried out. This pattern highlights the loving and merciful nature of God, who consistently rescues and demonstrates faithfulness across diverse circumstances.
From this verse we learn the importance of cultivating a grateful heart, offering thanksgiving not merely as ritual but as sincere worship, and declaring God’s works with gladness. It challenges us to ask: Are we offering sacrifices of thanksgiving to God? Are we proclaiming His works with rejoicing?
May this passage inspire us to continually praise God, acknowledge His faithfulness, and share His goodness with others, thereby encouraging and uplifting fellow believers on their own faith journeys.
