Psalms 107:23
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
Psalms 107:23 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 107 is a song of thanksgiving for God’s steadfast love and faithfulness toward His people. It presents several pictures of distress and deliverance, and this verse introduces the fourth: those who go down to the sea in ships to conduct their business on the great waters. In ancient times, sea travel was dangerous and uncertain, yet it also offered opportunities for trade and growth. The verse sets the stage for the next one, which says these seafarers see the works of the Lord and His wonders in the deep.
Meaning
The sea in biblical literature often represents chaos, danger, and the unknown. Going down to the sea in ships means embarking on a risky journey, facing the uncertainties and perils of life’s voyage. The phrase “do business in great waters” points to merchants and traders who venture far from shore, engaging in commerce on vast and deep waters. It speaks of those who, in pursuit of their livelihood, encounter circumstances that test their skill and courage.
Biblical connections
This verse is the fourth instance in the psalm of people in distress crying to the Lord and, having received help, being obliged to praise Him. The same form of expression appears in Isaiah 42:10, and the phrase is similar to Revelation 18:17, which refers to “as many as trade by sea.” The connection shows that seafaring was a recognized occupation with its own perils and that God’s care extends to those who work in such dangerous places.
Application
The verse can also be metaphorical, reflecting the human experience and life’s journey. Just as sailors brave the sea, we navigate through unpredictable waters—storms, challenges, and uncertainties in our personal lives and spiritual walk. Sailors depend on their ships and navigational skills, but they also recognize the need for divine intervention to reach safety. We are encouraged to acknowledge our dependence on God, trusting in His providence and seeking His guidance through every challenge.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that even in the midst of life’s storms, God remains sovereign and in control. He rules over the great waters and has the power to calm the raging seas. Psalm 107:23 calls us to trust in Him, recognizing His sovereignty and seeking His protection as we face the uncertainties and challenges of our journey.
