Psalms 107:39

Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.

Psalms 107:39 (KJV)

Psalm 107 is a song of thanksgiving for God’s deliverance. It shows people crying out to the Lord in trouble, and God rescuing them. Verse 39 comes near the end of the psalm, after earlier verses describe God’s blessing and increase upon His people. Now the scene changes to hardship.

The word “minished” is an old English term meaning “diminished” or “made few.” The people are reduced in number and brought low through three causes: oppression, affliction, and sorrow. These words describe severe pressure from enemies, painful circumstances, and deep grief. The verse does not explain why this happens, but it honestly records that God’s people can face such seasons. This description contrasts with the preceding verses, which recount God’s blessings and increase upon His people.

Being “brought low” is a repeated picture in the Psalms. It often prepares the way for God to lift up the humble. In the next verse, Psalm 107:40, God pours contempt on princes and makes them wander. This shows that God is sovereign over both the proud and the needy. The same God who allows diminishment can also restore. The psalm’s pattern is clear: people cry out in distress, and God rescues them.

Many believers know what it means to feel diminished by oppression, affliction, or sorrow. This verse gives honest language for that pain. It does not promise immediate relief, but it places the sufferer in a psalm where God repeatedly hears and rescues. When you are low, you can cry out to the Lord, knowing He is able to lift you up. The verse also reminds us of human frailty and the reality of living in a fallen world.

God’s power is most clearly seen when human strength fails. The verse reminds us that our circumstances do not limit God’s ability to save. He who brought His people low can also raise them again. Trust Him to work in your season of sorrow, for He is the one who lifts up the needy.
