Psalms 113:3

From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord’s name is to be praised.

Psalms 113:3 (KJV)

Psalm 113 opens the “Hallel” psalms, a collection from Psalms 113 to 118 that was traditionally sung during Jewish festivals, including Passover. These psalms celebrate God’s mighty acts and His faithful care for His people.

The verse declares that from the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the LORD is to be praised. This phrase covers the whole day and the whole earth, showing that praise is not limited to one place or time. The “name” of the LORD stands for His character, His power, and all that He has revealed about Himself. Because God is great and good, His name deserves honor everywhere and always.

The call to praise is both a duty and a delight. The psalmist urges every person, in every land, to join in magnifying the LORD. This is not a command for a special occasion only; it is the proper response of all creation to its Creator.

The rest of Psalm 113 shows why such praise is fitting. God is high above all nations, yet He stoops to care for the lowly. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the dunghill, and He gives the barren woman a joyful home. This connection reminds us that God’s majesty and His mercy belong together. His greatness is seen not only in His glory but also in His kindness to the humble.

Psalm 113:3 calls us to make praise a way of life. Our worship should not be confined to a building or a service. From morning to night, in every place we go, we can honor God with our words and our actions. When we wake, we can thank Him for a new day. When we work, we can serve Him with honesty. When we rest, we can remember His faithfulness.

This verse also encourages us to praise God even when life is hard. The same God who rules the heavens also cares for the poor and the needy. Because He is both great and gracious, we can trust Him and lift our voices to Him at all times.

Consider how often your thoughts turn to the LORD during an ordinary day. Does your praise flow from sunrise to sunset, or does it fade when distractions come? Let this verse shape your heart so that honoring God becomes as natural as the sun’s daily path. May your life, from morning to evening, be a continuous offering of praise to His name.
