Psalms 114:3

Listen to this article

“The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.”

Psalm 114: is a psalm of praise that vividly portrays the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. It emphasizes God’s power and sovereignty over creation. In verse 3, we encounter a poetic description of the miraculous events that took place during the Exodus.

The verse begins with the statement, “The sea saw it, and fled.” This is a reference to the parting of the Red Sea when the Israelites were fleeing from Egypt. In Exodus 14, we read how God miraculously opened a path through the sea for the Israelites, allowing them to pass on dry ground while the pursuing Egyptian army was drowned as the waters closed back in. The imagery of the sea “fleeing” captures the sense of awe and wonder at this extraordinary event. It illustrates how creation itself responded to God’s power and intervention on behalf of His people.

The second part of the verse says, “Jordan was driven back.” This refers to another miraculous crossing, the crossing of the Jordan River, which took place when the Israelites entered the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua. In Joshua 3, we read that the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant stepped into the flooded Jordan River, and as soon as their feet touched the water, the flow of the river ceased, piling up in a heap upstream. This allowed the people to cross over on dry ground, just as they had crossed the Red Sea. The Jordan River, like the Red Sea, responded to the power of God and retreated, enabling the Israelites to pass through.

Both instances described in Psalm 114:3 depict God’s control over nature and His ability to intervene on behalf of His people. The power of God demonstrated in these events is a source of awe and reverence, as well as a testament to His faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. These passages remind us that no obstacle or barrier is too great for God, and He can make a way where there seems to be no way.

In a broader sense, Psalm 114 as a whole invites us to reflect on the power of God in our lives. It encourages us to trust in His sovereignty and to acknowledge His ability to deliver us from challenging situations. Just as the sea and the Jordan River yielded to God’s command, we are reminded that we can place our trust in Him, knowing that He is capable of overcoming any obstacle or difficulty we may face.

Overall, Psalm 114:3 presents a powerful image of God’s intervention in the natural world for the benefit of His people. It inspires us to have faith in His power and to recognize His ability to accomplish the extraordinary in our lives.
