Psalms 115:7
They haue hands, but they handle not, feete haue they, but they walke not: neither speake they through their throat. Psalms 115:7 (KJV)
Context: To understand the verse better, it’s helpful to examine the surrounding verses and the overall theme of the psalm. Psalm 115 focuses on the glory and trustworthiness of God, in contrast to the idols that are futile and powerless. The psalmist acknowledges that the nations worship false gods and emphasizes the superiority of the living God. Psalm 115:5-7 describes the idols’ inability to function: “They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.”
The verse begins by saying, “They have hands, but they handle not.” This statement refers to the physical forms of the idols that are crafted with hands by human beings, but they lack the ability to act or accomplish anything. The idols cannot extend their hands to help or intervene in any way. The verse continues, “Feet have they, but they walk not.” This line emphasizes the immobility of the idols. Unlike the living God who is active and involved, the idols are incapable of movement and cannot go anywhere or respond to the needs of their worshippers. The final phrase says, “Neither speak they through their throat.” Here, the psalmist points out that the idols cannot speak or communicate; they are mute and cannot offer guidance, comfort, or wisdom. In contrast, God, through His Word, speaks to His people, revealing His will and providing instruction.
This passage highlights the stark contrast between the false idols and the living God. While idols are powerless and lifeless, God is actively involved in the lives of His people. He has the power to act, the ability to move, and the capacity to communicate.
Though this passage specifically addresses the worship of idols, it also has broader applications for our lives today. It reminds us that we should not place our trust in anything or anyone that is powerless or incapable of helping us. Instead, we are encouraged to put our faith in the living God who is able to act, guide, and speak to us through His Word and the Holy Spirit.
