Psalms 115:9

O Israel, trust thou in the Lord: he is their help and their shield.

Context

Psalm 115 contrasts the living God with powerless idols. In verse 9, the psalmist directly commands Israel to trust in the Lord. Each group hears the same promise that God is their help and shield.

Meaning

The Hebrew word for “help” is “ezer,” meaning strong and dependable aid. God’s help is not limited by human weakness; He actively supports and delivers His people. The word “shield” pictures a warrior’s protection in battle. God defends His people from spiritual and physical dangers, covering them completely.

Trusting the Lord means surrendering our own plans and relying on His wisdom. It is a deliberate choice, not a passive feeling. The verse calls Israel to place confidence in God alone, not in human strength or material resources.

Biblical connections

Psalm 37:3 and Psalm 62:8 also urge trust in God, showing that this command runs through the Psalms. The Targum, an ancient Aramaic paraphrase, renders this verse as “Israel trusteth in the Word of the Lord,” connecting to the broader theme of God’s self-revelation. This trust is the proper response to God’s glory and power, which belong to Him alone.

Application
