Psalms 116:12

Listen to this article

“What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?”

Context:Psalm 116 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise. It is attributed to King David and is believed to have been written during a time of distress or danger when God delivered him from his enemies or a life-threatening situation. The psalmist begins by declaring his love for the Lord, who heard his cry for help (verse 1) and saved him from the realm of death (verse 3). The psalmist expresses gratitude for God’s mercy, grace, and faithfulness throughout the psalm.

Gratitude and Response:Psalm 116:12 reflects the psalmist’s deep gratitude for the Lord’s benefits or blessings. The psalmist acknowledges that God has done great things for him and wonders how he can adequately respond. The question, “What shall I render unto the LORD?” reveals a sincere desire to offer something in return for God’s goodness.

The Recognition of God’s Benefits:The psalmist acknowledges that God has shown him numerous benefits or blessings. These benefits can include deliverance, protection, provision, guidance, forgiveness, mercy, and grace. The psalmist recognizes that everything good in his life comes from God’s hand.

The Call to Action:The psalmist’s question, “What shall I render unto the LORD?” implies a call to action, a response to God’s goodness. It signifies the psalmist’s desire to express gratitude and demonstrate his devotion to God.

Offering and Worship:The psalmist is seeking guidance on how to express gratitude and give something back to the Lord. In the subsequent verses (Psalm 116:13-19), the psalmist mentions a series of offerings and acts of worship that he will present to God. These include lifting up the cup of salvation, calling upon the name of the Lord, paying vows, offering sacrifices of thanksgiving, and praising God publicly.

We can respond to God’s benefits by:

  • a. Expressing gratitude: Cultivating a thankful heart and acknowledging God’s goodness in our lives.
  • b. Worship and praise: Offering our worship, adoration, and praise to God for His faithfulness and blessings.
  • c. Offering our lives: Dedicate our lives to God, seeking to live in obedience to His Word and walking in His ways.
  • d. Service and ministry: Utilizing our gifts, talents, and resources to serve others and advance God’s kingdom.
  • e. Sharing the Gospel: Spreading the good news of Jesus Christ’s salvation with others, so they too can experience God’s benefits.

In conclusion, Psalm 116:12 prompts us to reflect on God’s blessings and consider how we can respond to His goodness with gratitude, worship, obedience, service, and sharing His love with others.
