Listen to this article

“I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord.”

Context:Psalm 116 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise to God for His deliverance and faithfulness. It is attributed to David, although the author is not explicitly mentioned. The psalmist expresses gratitude for being rescued from a dire situation and declares his commitment to honor God.

Taking the Cup of Salvation:

  • The “cup of salvation” symbolizes God’s deliverance, blessings, and redemption.
  • In the Old Testament, the cup often symbolized God’s judgment, wrath, or blessings. Here, the psalmist chooses to take the cup of salvation, signifying his acceptance and participation in God’s deliverance and grace.
  • Taking the cup of salvation implies an act of faith, trust, and submission to God. It signifies acknowledging God’s work in our lives and accepting His salvation.

Calling upon the name of the Lord:

  • Calling upon the name of the Lord denotes seeking God’s presence, guidance, and help. It reflects a posture of dependence, surrender, and worship.
  • The act of calling upon the name of the Lord expresses the psalmist’s recognition of God’s sovereignty and authority. It demonstrates a personal relationship with God and a desire for communion with Him.
  • By calling upon God’s name, the psalmist acknowledges that God is the source of salvation and help. It signifies reliance on God rather than relying on one’s own strength or resources.
