Psalms 118:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:11

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

Context:Psalm 118 is a song of praise and thanksgiving to God for His enduring love and faithfulness. It is attributed to King David and is often recited during Jewish festivals, including Passover. In this particular verse, the psalmist expresses his commitment to God’s Word as a means of avoiding sin.

Importance of God’s Word:The verse highlights the value and significance of God’s Word. The psalmist emphasises the act of hiding God’s Word in his heart. This implies treasuring, memorising, and internalising Scripture. The Word of God serves as a guide and a source of wisdom, helping believers to discern right from wrong and make godly choices.

Personal Commitment:The psalmist declares, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart.” This statement reveals a personal commitment and dedication to God’s Word. It demonstrates the psalmist’s desire to make God’s Word an integral part of his inner being, influencing his thoughts, actions, and decisions.

Protection against Sin:The psalmist states that the purpose of hiding God’s Word in his heart is to avoid sinning against God. By internalising and meditating on Scripture, the psalmist seeks to develop a righteous character and live in accordance with God’s commands. The Word of God acts as a safeguard, providing guidance and strength to resist temptation and walk in obedience to God.

Application:This verse encourages believers to prioritise the study, memorisation, and meditation on God’s Word. By doing so, they can grow in their relationship with God, gain understanding, and equip themselves to live in a manner pleasing to Him. The psalmist’s example challenges us to actively engage with Scripture, allowing it to transform our hearts, minds, and actions.

Connection to Jesus Christ:As Christians, we see a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ in the verse. Jesus perfectly exemplified the commitment to God’s Word and its application in His life. In resisting temptation during His wilderness experience (Matthew 4:1-11), Jesus quoted Scripture as a defence against sin. By following Jesus’ example and relying on the Word of God, believers can find strength to resist sin and remain faithful to God.

In conclusion, Psalm 118:11 teaches us the importance of treasuring God’s Word in our hearts, actively applying it in our lives, and relying on its guidance to avoid sin. It encourages believers to make a personal commitment to internalise Scripture, allowing it to shape their character and direct their paths.
