Psalms 115:16

The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.

Psalms 115:16 (KJV)

Psalm 115 was written to remind Israel that the living God alone deserves praise. The surrounding verses contrast the Lord with idols made by human hands. Verse 16 then draws a clear line between God’s rule over the heavens and His gift of the earth to people.

The phrase “the heaven, even the heavens” points to the whole created sky, from the visible clouds to the highest dwelling place of God’s majesty. All of it belongs to the Lord. He made it, owns it, and sustains it by His power. The earth, however, is given to the children of men. This is not a loss of God’s authority. It is a gracious grant of responsibility. God remains sovereign over everything, but He has chosen to entrust the earth to human care.

This verse echoes the creation account, where God gave Adam and Eve dominion over the earth and its creatures (Genesis 1:26-28). That command was not a removal of God’s rule. It was a delegation of stewardship. Humans act as representatives of God, caring for what He owns. The same pattern appears throughout Scripture: God is the owner, and people are managers who will answer to Him.

Because the earth is a gift, our use of it should show gratitude. We are to care for the land, the animals, and the resources God has placed under our care. This includes honest work, wise use of creation, and kindness to other people. We are not owners but stewards, and we will give an account to the true Owner. This truth also guards against pride. Our place on earth is not earned; it is given.

God is exalted above the heavens, yet He has drawn near to humanity by giving us a share in His work. This should lead us to humility and worship. We do not rule in our own right, but under the authority of the Lord. As we live each day, we can honor Him by treating the earth and its people as sacred trusts. The verse invites us to rejoice in God’s greatness and to accept our responsibility with joy.
