Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Genesis 1:27 (KJV)
Context
Genesis 1:27 appears near the end of the six-day creation account. God has already made light, sky, land, plants, sun, moon, and animals. Now He creates humanity as the final and crowning work. The verse uses three parallel lines, a poetic pattern that stresses the importance of what God does. The Hebrew word for man, adam, means humanity as a whole, not just one male person. The shift from singular him to plural them shows that both male and female together bear God’s image.
Meaning
Being made in God’s image means humans reflect His character in a way no other creature does. This is not a physical resemblance, for God is spirit. It is a spiritual and moral likeness, including reason, creativity, moral awareness, and the capacity for relationships. Because every person bears this image, each one has inherent dignity and worth. This truth sets humans apart from the rest of creation and gives them a unique role.
Biblical connections
The verse also affirms that God created male and female in His image. Both equally bear this likeness, so men and women share the same value and dignity. Their complementary nature is described more fully in Genesis 2, where God forms Eve from Adam. The image of God also connects to the next verse, Genesis 1:28, where God blesses humans and gives them dominion over the earth. That dominion is not a license to exploit but a call to responsible stewardship, reflecting God’s wise and loving rule.
Application
Understanding that we are made in God’s image shapes how we see ourselves and others. Every person, regardless of gender, race, or social status, possesses worth because they reflect their Creator. This truth calls us to respect and protect human life. It also directs us to live as image-bearers, displaying love, compassion, justice, and creativity in our daily actions. Our identity as God’s image-bearers influences our relationships with God, with other people, and with the world around us.
Reflection
Genesis 1:27 lays the foundation for understanding human purpose and value. It reminds us that we are not accidents but intentional creations of a loving God. As we grow in this truth, we learn to honour God by honouring the people He has made. This verse invites us to live with humility and gratitude, knowing that we bear the image of the Creator Himself.
