Psalms 118:10
All nations compassed me about: but in the Name of the Lord, will I destroy them. Psalms 118:10 (KJV)
Psalm 118 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise, often associated with celebrations and processions, particularly in the context of the Hebrew people’s deliverance from enemies and their experience of God’s steadfast love. It is the middle chapter of the “Egyptian Hallel” (Psalms 113‑118), which was sung during the Jewish Passover feast. In Psalm 118:10 the psalmist describes being surrounded or “compassed about” by nations. This description can be understood both literally, as military or political adversaries, and metaphorically, as a feeling of being overwhelmed by various challenges or enemies. Yet the psalmist declares unwavering confidence that the name of the Lord is the means of victory over these forces. By invoking the name of the Lord, the psalmist proclaims his trust and dependence on God’s power and deliverance, believing that through God’s intervention the enemies will be destroyed. The phrase “in the name of the Lord” carries significant meaning throughout Scripture; in biblical times a name represented character, authority, and presence. Acting in the name of the Lord therefore acknowledges that the psalmist is operating under the authority and power of God Himself. It affirms faith in God’s strength and recognizes that victory comes not from human might alone but from reliance on the divine. This verse can serve as a reminder for believers today, encouraging us to face challenges and opposition with unwavering trust in God’s power and sovereignty. It declares that, regardless of circumstances, we can find strength and victory in God’s name. As Christians we also understand the name of the Lord to refer to the name of Jesus Christ. The New Testament teaches that Jesus has been given a name above every other name (Philippians 2:9‑11) and that through faith in His name we find salvation and deliverance (Acts 4:12). Thus Psalm 118:10 reminds believers of the power and authority we have in Christ, knowing that victory and deliverance are found in Him. In summary, the psalmist’s confidence in the name of the Lord is a call for believers to trust in God’s power and authority, finding strength and triumph in His name.
