The voice of rejoicing and salvation

is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. Psalms 118:15 (KJV)

Psalm 118 belongs to the collection known as the “Hallel” (praise) psalms, which were sung during Jewish festivals such as Passover. While many psalms carry a superscription attributing them to King David, Psalm 118 does not, and scholars generally regard it as a post‑exilic composition. The psalm is a song of thanksgiving and celebration for God’s deliverance and steadfast love.

“The voice of rejoicing” denotes the joyful sounds of praise and celebration that arise from the righteous. In this context it represents the collective worship and exultation of those who live in a right relationship with God, obeying His commandments and trusting in His salvation. Their “tabernacles” are the dwellings or gathering places of God’s people, echoing the temporary booths of the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) and the portable sanctuary where God’s presence dwelt during the wilderness journey. The term can also be understood more broadly to include the temple in Jerusalem or today’s places of worship where believers assemble.

“The right hand of the Lord” symbolizes God’s power, authority, and victorious strength. Throughout Scripture the right hand is associated with triumph, deliverance, and the ability to accomplish great deeds on behalf of His people. The verse’s concluding phrase, “the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly,” highlights divine intervention and the mighty works performed by God’s hand. It underscores that it is God’s strength and power that bring salvation and deliverance, demonstrating His faithfulness and willingness to aid those who trust in Him.

Thus, Psalm 118:15 invites believers to join the chorus of rejoicing within the spiritual tabernacles of the faithful, confident that the Lord’s valiant right hand is ever at work to secure their salvation and uphold His steadfast love.
