Psalms 119:71
“It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I might learn thy statutes.”
The value of affliction:The psalmist acknowledges that it is good for them to have been afflicted. This may seem counterintuitive at first, as affliction typically involves hardship, suffering, or distress. However, the psalmist recognizes that affliction can serve a purpose in their life, leading to a positive outcome.
Learning God’s statutes:The psalmist sees affliction as an opportunity to learn God’s statutes. This refers to the divine laws, principles, and teachings that God has revealed to His people. In the midst of affliction, the psalmist seeks to gain a deeper understanding of God’s ways and desires to align their life with His will.
The connection between affliction and spiritual growth:The psalmist suggests that affliction can be a catalyst for spiritual growth. Through trials and challenges, one can develop a greater reliance on God, gain wisdom, and deepen their faith. Affliction can prompt self-reflection, humility, and a renewed commitment to seeking God’s guidance.
Trusting God’s purpose:The psalmist’s perspective demonstrates trust in God’s sovereignty and belief that He can bring good even out of difficult circumstances. They recognize that God can use affliction as a means to shape their character, teach important lessons, and draw them closer to Himself.
Applying this verse to our lives, we can learn several lessons:
Embracing hardships:Instead of resenting or running away from affliction, we can adopt a perspective that recognizes its potential value in our spiritual growth. This doesn’t mean seeking out suffering, but rather acknowledging that God can use difficult experiences to mold us.
Seeking God’s wisdom:In times of affliction, we can turn to God’s Word, meditate on His statutes, and seek His guidance. It is through understanding His teachings that we gain insight and direction for navigating challenges.
Trusting in God’s plan:Even when we face affliction, we can trust that God has a purpose for allowing it in our lives. We can rely on His faithfulness and sovereignty, knowing that He can work all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
Growing through adversity:Rather than allowing affliction to discourage or embitter us, we can choose to approach it as an opportunity for growth. As we persevere, trust God, and seek His wisdom, we can emerge from difficult seasons stronger in our faith and closer to Him.
Psalm 119:71 reminds us that God can work through affliction to bring about positive outcomes in our lives. It encourages us to embrace the lessons found in difficult circumstances and seek a deeper understanding of God’s ways.
