Psalms 119:123
Mine eyes faile for thy saluation: and for the word of thy righteousnesse. Psalms 119:123 (KJV)
Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the book of Psalms, containing 176 verses arranged as a beautiful acrostic poem, each stanza beginning with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The psalmist declares a deep love, devotion, and commitment to God’s law and to the pursuit of righteousness, presenting the chapter as a celebration of God’s Word and its vital place in the believer’s life.
In verse 123 the psalmist proclaims, “Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for the word of thy righteousness.” The language of “eyes fail” conveys a weary, yearning gaze fixed on God’s deliverance. Whether understood as a plea for rescue from enemies, physical affliction, or spiritual struggle, the verse expresses an earnest desperation for God’s salvation. At the same time the psalmist longs for “the word of thy righteousness,” a phrase that points to God’s law, His righteous decrees, and the instructions that guide holy living. The combination of these two petitions underscores the belief that true salvation and righteousness are found in God’s revealed Word.
The significance of God’s Word is repeatedly highlighted. It is presented as the pathway to righteousness, the source of divine guidance, and the standard by which the believer is to align thoughts, actions, and decisions. By yearning for the “word of thy righteousness,” the psalmist acknowledges that the statutes themselves contain the means to live a life pleasing to God.
For believers today, Psalm 119:123 serves as a clear reminder to prioritize a heartfelt longing for God’s salvation and for His Word. It calls us to recognize our dependence on divine intervention and to earnestly seek God’s guidance in every circumstance. The verse encourages diligent study and daily application of Scripture, urging that our lives be shaped by the very ordinances and righteous teachings we cherish. In doing so, we align ourselves with the path of righteousness and experience the fulfillment that comes from walking in God’s truth.
