Psalms 119:123

Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for the word of thy righteousness.

Psalms 119:123 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, with 176 verses arranged as an acrostic poem. Each stanza begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The psalmist expresses deep love and commitment to God’s law, presenting the chapter as a celebration of God’s Word and its vital place in the believer’s life.

The phrase “Mine eyes fail” conveys a weary, yearning gaze fixed on God’s deliverance. The psalmist’s eyes are strained and exhausted from eagerly looking for God’s salvation. This longing is not only for rescue from enemies or affliction, but also for spiritual salvation, its joys and comforts, and ultimately for the Messiah, the author of salvation. The second phrase, “the word of thy righteousness,” points to God’s righteous promise and His faithful commitment to save and vindicate. Together, these petitions show that true salvation and righteousness are found in God’s revealed Word.

The psalmist’s eyes fail, but his faith does not. He continues to look to God’s salvation and righteous word, even when deliverance seems delayed. This posture of persistent hope appears throughout Scripture, where believers are called to wait on the Lord with expectant faith. The verse also echoes the psalmist’s deep dependence on God’s character, not on his own efforts.

For believers today, this verse reminds us to prioritize a heartfelt longing for God’s salvation and His Word. It calls us to recognize our dependence on divine intervention and to earnestly seek God’s guidance in every circumstance. The verse encourages diligent study and daily application of Scripture, urging that our lives be shaped by the righteous teachings we cherish. When we feel weary, we can turn our gaze back to God’s promises.

When our own eyes grow weary from waiting, we can take comfort that God sees our longing and remains faithful to His word. Our hope is not in our own strength, but in the righteous promise of the God who saves. Even in the waiting, He sustains our faith and renews our vision.
