Psalms 119:162

I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.

Psalms 119:162 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, with 176 verses arranged in sections that follow the Hebrew alphabet. This verse belongs to the section for the letter Shin. The whole psalm celebrates God’s word as a guide, a comfort, and a source of life. Here the writer expresses his personal joy in that word.

The word “rejoice” means deep delight and satisfaction, not casual happiness. The psalmist compares his joy to that of a soldier who finds great spoil after a victory, or a person who discovers hidden treasure. Such spoil is abundant, valuable, and often unexpected. In the same way, God’s word is a treasure that brings victory and enrichment to those who receive it.

The joy is not only in having the word, but in understanding it. When a person truly grasps what God has revealed, delight follows naturally. This joy is also a distinguishing blessing, because not everyone has access to God’s truth. The psalmist recognizes that the word is an inestimable treasure, worth more than any earthly riches. This is not a casual happiness but an intense, exuberant joy at possessing something of immense value.

This verse echoes the teaching of Psalm 19:10, where God’s judgments are described as more desirable than gold and sweeter than honey. Both passages show that Scripture’s value surpasses material wealth. The joy of finding spoil also recalls the victories God gave Israel, when plunder was a sign of His favor and power.

We can grow in this same joy by treating Scripture as a treasure, not a duty. Reading the Bible regularly, praying for a delighted heart, and seeking to understand its context and meaning help us value it more. As we apply its teachings, we experience its wisdom and comfort. Sharing this joy with others encourages them to explore its riches too.

When we open the Bible, do we expect to find treasure? The psalmist’s joy challenges us to approach God’s word with anticipation, knowing that it holds abundant and lasting reward. This joy is rooted in the recognition that God’s word is a distinguishing blessing and an inestimable treasure, worth more than any material spoil.
