“More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”

Psalm 19:10 (KJV) says: “More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”

Context: Psalm 19 is a beautiful psalm that extols the glory of God’s creation and the revelation of His word. The psalmist marvels at the wonders of the heavens, the perfect law of the Lord, and the importance of keeping His commandments. In verse 10, the psalmist describes the value and desirability of God’s laws and words.

Desiring God’s Word: The verse begins by emphasizing the surpassing value of God’s words compared to material wealth. Gold, especially fine gold, was considered extremely precious and desirable in biblical times. However, the psalmist asserts that God’s words are even more desirable than the finest gold. This highlights the priceless nature and importance of God’s Word in our lives.

The Sweetness of God’s Word: The psalmist goes on to compare God’s words to honey and the honeycomb. Honey was highly regarded as a natural sweetener and was seen as a symbol of delight and satisfaction. The psalmist expresses that God’s words are not only more valuable than gold but also sweeter than honey. This conveys the idea that God’s Word brings joy, comfort, and fulfillment to those who receive it.

Spiritual Nourishment: Just as honey provides physical nourishment, God’s Word provides spiritual nourishment to our souls. It satisfies the deepest longings of our hearts, bringing wisdom, guidance, and spiritual sustenance. The psalmist highlights the delight and satisfaction found in immersing oneself in the teachings and commands of the Lord.

Application:

  • Psalm 19:10 reminds us of the immeasurable worth of God’s Word in our lives. It surpasses any earthly treasure and brings a sweetness that nothing else can offer. As believers, we should cultivate a deep desire for God’s Word, recognizing its value and seeking to study it, meditate on it, and apply its principles in our daily lives. By doing so, we can experience the spiritual nourishment, joy, and satisfaction that come from walking in obedience to God’s commands.

In conclusion, Psalm 19:10 portrays the matchless value of God’s Word, which surpasses all earthly treasures and brings a sweetness that satisfies our souls. May we treasure and desire God’s Word above all else, finding delight in its teachings and allowing it to shape our lives.
