Psalms 121:6

Listen to this article

“The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.”

Psalm 121:6 (KJV) says: “The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.”

This verse is part of a beautiful psalm known as the “Psalm of Ascents” or the “Song of Ascents.” These psalms (Psalms 120-134) were traditionally sung by the Israelites as they made their pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the annual feasts.

Context of the Psalm:Psalm 121 is a psalm of trust and assurance in God’s care and protection. The psalmist acknowledges that their help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth (verse 2). The psalmist looks up to the mountains, symbolic of both challenges and divine help, and declares that their help comes from the Lord who watches over them (verse 1-2). The psalmist recognizes God as the ever-vigilant keeper who never slumbers nor sleeps (verse 3-4). The psalmist expresses confidence that the Lord will protect them from all harm, even from the sun and the moon (verse 5-6).

Symbolism of the Sun and the Moon:In Psalm 121:6, the mention of the sun and the moon represents the day and night. The phrase “The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night” highlights God’s continuous protection over His people. The scorching heat of the sun and the darkness of the night, which could be associated with various dangers, will not harm those who put their trust in God. The psalmist is affirming that God’s watchful care extends throughout both day and night, providing constant protection.

God’s All-encompassing Protection:This verse emphasizes the comprehensive and continuous nature of God’s protection. By stating that the sun will not “smite” (strike, harm) by day and the moon by night, the psalmist assures the reader that God’s care extends to all aspects of life. Whether it is the blazing heat of the day or the unknown perils of the night, God’s presence and protection are steadfast.

Spiritual Application:

  • Psalms 121:6 carries spiritual significance beyond its literal interpretation. It reminds us of God’s unwavering presence and protection in our lives. Just as the sun and the moon represent day and night, this verse assures us that God’s care encompasses every season of our lives. It reminds us that God is not limited by time or circumstances but is continually vigilant and attentive to our needs.

In times of adversity, uncertainty, or danger, we can take comfort in knowing that God is with us. He shields us from harm, guides us, and keeps us secure in His loving care. This verse encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness and lean on His promises.

As you meditate on Psalm 121:6, may it strengthen your faith and deepen your trust in the Lord’s constant protection, both in the visible and invisible challenges of life.
