Psalms 121:7

The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

Context

Psalm 121 belongs to the Songs of Ascents, a group of psalms from Psalm 120 to Psalm 134. Pilgrims sang these songs as they traveled up to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. The journey could be dangerous, so this psalm expresses strong trust in God’s protection along the way.

Meaning

The verse declares that the Lord shall preserve His people from all evil. The Hebrew word for “preserve” is “shamar,” which means to guard, watch over, or keep. It pictures a vigilant keeper who never sleeps. This promise covers every kind of evil: the evil of sin, the wickedness of the world, and the attacks of Satan. It does not mean believers will never face hardship. Rather, God keeps them from being destroyed by evil and makes even affliction work for their good.

The second half of the verse says, “he shall preserve thy soul.” The soul is the inner being, the eternal part of a person that lives in relationship with God.
