Psalms 133:1

Listen to this article

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”

Context of the Psalm: Psalm 133 is one of the Psalms of Ascent, which were sung by pilgrims as they made their way to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. This particular psalm is attributed to David and consists of only three verses. It emphasizes the beauty and significance of unity among God’s people.

The verse begins with an exclamation, “Behold!” This word indicates that something noteworthy and deserving of attention is about to be revealed. It emphasizes the author’s awe and wonder at the subject matter. The psalmist declares that unity among brethren is both good and pleasant.

The goodness and pleasantness of unity: Unity among God’s people is good because it aligns with God’s design and purpose for His people. It reflects the unity and harmony within the Godhead (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and is a blessing from God Himself. When brothers and sisters in Christ come together in unity, it brings about blessings and favors from the Lord.

Unity is also pleasant or delightful. It brings joy, satisfaction, and a sense of well-being. When people are united, there is a bond of love, support, and mutual care. It creates an atmosphere of harmony and cooperation, which is pleasing both to God and to those who experience it.

Dwelling together in unity: The psalmist uses the metaphor of dwelling together to describe the nature of unity. Dwelling together implies living in close proximity, sharing common space, and engaging in communal life. It goes beyond mere coexistence; it speaks of a deep and intimate bond among brethren.

The unity described in this verse is primarily spiritual. It is the unity of believers who share a common faith in God and a common relationship with Jesus Christ. It is a unity that is rooted in the Holy Spirit, who dwells in each believer and unites them into one body, the Church.

While spiritual unity is foundational, it also has practical implications. Dwelling together in unity involves actively living out the principles of love, forgiveness, humility, and mutual edification. It means caring for one another, bearing each other’s burdens, and working together for the advancement of God’s kingdom.

Application and significance: Psalm 133:1 reminds us of the value and beauty of unity among believers. It emphasizes the importance of fostering harmonious relationships within the body of Christ. When we are united, we reflect God’s character and attract others to the Gospel. Unity also strengthens us as believers, allowing us to effectively fulfill our calling and impact the world around us.

This verse highlights the significance of unity within the local church. It calls believers to cultivate an environment where love, harmony, and mutual support flourish. When we dwell together in unity, we become a powerful witness to the world, displaying the love of Christ and drawing others to Him.

The principle of unity extends beyond the walls of the church. As Christians, we are called to pursue unity in our families, workplaces, communities, and even in our interactions with believers from different denominations. Our unity should transcend differences and be a testimony to the transforming power of the Gospel.

In conclusion, Psalm 133:1 celebrates the goodness and pleasantness of dwelling together in unity among God’s people. It calls us to embrace and pursue unity, recognizing its importance in our lives and its impact on
