Psalms 133:2
It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;
Psalms 133:2 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 133 is one of the Songs of Ascents, sung by pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for worship. The psalm opens by declaring how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity (Psalm 133:1). Verse 2 then gives a striking picture of that unity, comparing it to the anointing oil poured on Aaron the high priest.
Meaning
The oil is called precious because it was costly and sacred. It was made according to a special recipe of fragrant spices (Exodus 30:22-33) and was used to consecrate priests for service to God. When Aaron was anointed, the oil was poured on his head, ran down his beard, and reached the collar of his robes (Leviticus 8:12). This flowing oil pictures a blessing that covers the whole person, from the highest point to the lowest. In the same way, unity among God’s people is not a surface harmony but a deep, pervasive blessing that reaches every part of the community. The oil was not merely decorative; it set Aaron apart for holy service, marking him as God’s chosen priest. This anointing was a visible sign of God’s favor and the sacredness of the priestly office.
Biblical connections
The anointing of Aaron points to the priestly calling of God’s people. Just as Aaron was set apart for holy service, believers are called to be a holy nation, set apart for God’s purposes. The oil also foreshadows Christ, the ultimate High Priest, who was anointed by the Spirit for His ministry. Yet the main point of the verse is the beauty of unity among believers, which is compared to this fragrant and costly anointing. The oil running down from the head to the robes shows that unity is not just a feeling but a comprehensive blessing that touches every aspect of the community. It is a gift from God, not something we achieve by our own strength.
Application
Unity is a gift from God, not something we produce by our own effort. When we dwell together in love, support, and care, we create an atmosphere where God’s blessings flow freely. This unity is a powerful testimony to the world, showing the love of Christ and drawing others to Him. As believers, we should value and pursue unity, recognizing it as a divine blessing that brings joy and spiritual refreshment. We can actively seek unity by practicing humility, forgiveness, and patience with one another. When we do, we allow God’s anointing to work through us, bringing healing and harmony to our churches and families.
Reflection
Pray over Psalm 133:2, asking God to help you cultivate unity in your relationships with fellow believers. Ask for a heart of love, forgiveness, and humility. Pray that God would pour out His anointing on your community, so that His presence may be evident among you and draw others to Him. Consider one relationship where unity is strained, and commit to taking a step of reconciliation this week. Trust that God, who gives the precious oil of His Spirit, will bless your efforts and make your fellowship a sweet fragrance to those around you.
