Exodus 30:22
Moreouer the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying, Exodus 30:22 (KJV)
In this verse we see the continuation of God’s direct communication with Moses, which introduces the detailed instructions for preparing the sacred anointing oil. The surrounding passages (Exodus 30:23‑25) specify the exact ingredients: five hundred shekels of pure myrrh, two hundred and fifty shekels each of sweet cinnamon and sweet calamus, five hundred shekels of cassia, and a hin of olive oil. God commands that these be blended “after the art of the apothecary,” producing a holy anointing oil distinct from ordinary oils.
The purpose of this oil becomes clear in verses 30:26‑29. It is to be applied to the tabernacle and all its furnishings—the ark of the testimony, the table and its vessels, the candlestick and its accessories, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering, and the laver. By anointing these items, God sanctifies them, declaring that whatever touches them is set apart as holy.
Verse 30:30 extends the use of the oil to the priestly line, commanding that Aaron and his sons be anointed and consecrated so that they may serve in the priest’s office. This underscores that the oil is not merely for objects but also for the people entrusted with mediating God’s presence.
The final section (30:31‑33) stresses the oil’s exclusive and perpetual nature. It is to be a “holy anointing oil” for all generations, never to be poured on a person’s flesh, and never to be replicated. Anyone who attempts to compound a similar oil or applies it to a stranger faces the severe penalty of being cut off from the community.
