It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard,

even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; Psalms 133:2 (KJV)

The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and heartfelt expressions of worship and praise to God. Psalm 133 is a short but powerful psalm that focuses on the beauty and significance of unity among God’s people.

Psalm 133 begins with the famous words, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1, KJV). The opening line emphasizes the goodness and pleasantness of unity among God’s people, and verse 2 uses a vivid analogy to illustrate that beauty.

The psalmist compares unity among brethren to the precious ointment that was poured upon the head of Aaron, the high priest of Israel. The anointing oil was a symbol of consecration and empowerment for service to God. It was a special oil made of various fragrant spices (Exodus 30:22‑33) and was poured on the head of the high priest during his consecration ceremony (Leviticus 8:12).

The imagery of the oil flowing from Aaron’s head and running down his beard, then down to the skirts of his garments, signifies the abundance and richness of God’s blessing. The oil not only covered Aaron’s head but also flowed over his beard and garments, encompassing his entire being. This represents the overflow of God’s anointing and blessing that reaches and benefits the whole community.

By comparing unity to the precious anointing oil, the psalmist highlights several aspects: unity is valuable and precious, just like the anointing oil; unity brings a sense of consecration and empowerment for God’s people; and unity is a beautiful and pleasant experience that reflects the love and unity found in God’s character.

As believers, this verse encourages us to pursue unity among fellow believers. Unity is not merely agreement; it involves a deep sense of love, support, and care for one another. When we dwell in unity, we create an atmosphere where God’s blessings can flow freely and where His presence can be experienced more fully. Unity among believers also serves as a powerful testimony to the world, showing them the love of Christ and drawing them to Him.

Reflect on Psalm 133:2 in prayer, asking God to help you cultivate and maintain unity in your relationships with fellow believers. Pray for a heart of love, forgiveness, and humility, and ask God to pour out His anointing upon your community so that His presence may be evident among you and draw others to Him.

Remember, studying the Bible is an ongoing process. It is beneficial to explore different translations, consult commentaries, and engage in group discussions to gain deeper insights into the Word of God.
