Psalms 135:9

“Who sent tokens and wonders into the midst of thee, O Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Psalm 135:9 (KJV):Psalm 135:9 (KJV) says, “Who sent tokens and wonders into the midst of thee, O Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants.”

1. Historical Background:

Psalm 135:9 refers to the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, specifically the plagues that were sent upon Pharaoh and his servants. This event is described in detail in the book of Exodus (Exodus 7-12).

2. Tokens and Wonders:

The verse mentions that God “sent tokens and wonders” upon Egypt. These tokens and wonders refer to the ten plagues that God brought upon the land of Egypt to demonstrate His power and to compel Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. These plagues included turning the water into blood, sending frogs, gnats, flies, livestock disease, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, and the death of the firstborn.

3. God’s Sovereignty:

This verse highlights the sovereignty and power of God. Despite Pharaoh’s resistance and stubbornness, God displayed His supremacy over the gods of Egypt and brought about miraculous signs and judgments. These plagues revealed God’s authority over nature, the animal kingdom, and the life and death of every Egyptian.

4. God’s Faithfulness:

Psalm 135:9 reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. He had promised Abraham that his descendants would be delivered from slavery and given the land of Canaan as their inheritance (Genesis 15:13-14). The plagues served as a means to bring about the fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham.

5. Lessons for Us:

  • a. Trust in God’s Power: The plagues serve as a powerful reminder that nothing is too difficult for God. He has the power to intervene in our lives and bring about miraculous deliverance, even in seemingly impossible situations.
  • b. God’s Judgment: The plagues also teach us about God’s righteous judgment. Pharaoh’s refusal to release the Israelites resulted in severe consequences. It serves as a warning that those who oppose God and oppress His people will face His judgment.
  • c. God’s Redemption: The deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt foreshadows the ultimate redemption through Jesus Christ. Just as God delivered His people from slavery in Egypt, He offers salvation and freedom from the bondage of sin through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.
  • d. Gratitude and Praise: Psalm 135 is a psalm of praise, and verse 9 specifically reminds us to give thanks to God for His mighty acts. We should express our gratitude for His deliverance, protection, and faithfulness in our lives.
