Psalms 135:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:11

“Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan”

Psalm 135:11 (KJV) says, “Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan”

This verse is a part of Psalm 135, which is a hymn of praise to the Lord for His mighty acts and His superiority over the gods of the nations. The verse specifically mentions Sihon, the king of the Amorites, and Og, the king of Bashan, as well as all the kingdoms of Canaan.

  • Historical context:Sihon and Og were significant kings in the time of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. When the Israelites approached the land of Canaan, they encountered various nations and kingdoms, including the Amorites, who were led by Sihon, and the kingdom of Bashan, ruled by Og. These kings and their kingdoms were obstacles in the Israelites’ path to the Promised Land.
  • Symbolic representation:In addition to the historical context, this verse holds symbolic and spiritual significance. Sihon, Og, and the kingdoms of Canaan represent the enemies and obstacles that the people of God face on their journey of faith. These can include physical enemies, but they can also represent spiritual battles, temptations, and challenges we encounter in our walk with God.
  • Trusting in God’s victory:By mentioning these kings and kingdoms, the psalmist acknowledges the opposition faced by the Israelites. However, the psalmist’s focus is not on the power or might of these enemies, but rather on the supremacy of God over them. It emphasizes the triumph of the Lord over the forces that stand against His people. It encourages believers to put their trust in God’s power, knowing that He is able to overcome any opposition or obstacle they may face.
  • Application to our lives:As Christians, we can draw inspiration from this verse. It reminds us that, like the Israelites, we will encounter various challenges and adversaries on our spiritual journey. It could be personal struggles, societal pressures, or even opposition to our faith. However, just as God delivered the Israelites from their enemies, He is faithful to deliver us as well. In times of difficulty, Psalm 135:11 encourages us to trust in the Lord’s sovereignty and power. Instead of being overwhelmed by our circumstances, we can place our confidence in God’s ability to overcome all obstacles. It reminds us that victory ultimately belongs to God, and as His children, we can find strength and assurance in Him.
