The sunne to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for euer. Psalms 136:8 (KJV)

Psalm 136 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise that repeatedly declares, “for his mercy endureth forever.” Each verse begins with a call to give thanks to the Lord for His goodness and concludes with the refrain that highlights God’s steadfast love throughout history. In verse 8 the psalmist mentions the sun as one of God’s creations, emphasizing its purpose in ruling by day. The sun serves as a powerful symbol of God’s sovereignty and providence, reminding believers of the order and care embedded in creation.

The central message of this verse is the enduring mercy of God. Though the sun rises and sets day after day, God’s mercy remains unchanging, not limited by time, circumstance, or human failure. This steadfast mercy testifies to God’s unchanging love and compassion.

Application

Gratitude: The verse invites us to give thanks to the Lord for His everlasting mercy. Reflecting on God’s faithfulness should inspire a heart of gratitude expressed through prayer, worship, and acts of kindness toward others.

Trust in God’s Provision: The daily rising of the sun, which provides light, warmth, and sustenance, reminds us that God likewise provides for our needs. We can rely on His mercy and have confidence in His faithfulness even in challenging seasons.

Reflection on God’s Character: The enduring mercy revealed here calls us to contemplate God’s nature—His loving‑kindness, compassion, and grace. Meditating on this mercy deepens our understanding of His character and encourages us to extend mercy to those around us.

Encouragement in Trials: Knowing that God’s mercy endures forever brings comfort during difficult times. This truth offers hope and sustains us, assuring that God’s goodness and faithfulness will see us through.

In summary, Psalm 136:8 praises God for the sun that rules by day and declares that His mercy endures forever. The verse highlights God’s steadfast love, sovereignty, provision, and unchanging nature, urging believers to express gratitude, trust in His provision, reflect on His character, and find encouragement in His enduring mercy.
