To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for euer. Psalms 136:7 (KJV)

Psalm 136 is known as a psalm of thanksgiving, a hymn of praise that follows a striking pattern: each verse begins with a call to give thanks to the Lord and ends with the refrain “for his mercy endureth for ever.” The purpose of this psalm is to celebrate and remember God’s steadfast love and faithfulness throughout history.

The phrase “him that made great lights” points to God as the Creator of the heavenly lights, especially the sun and the moon. It acknowledges His sovereignty and power in establishing the celestial bodies that provide light, govern day and night, and sustain the universe. By highlighting the greatness of creation, the verse draws our attention to God’s role as the sustainer of all that shines.

The enduring mercy of God is a central theme of Psalm 136. The psalmist affirms that God’s mercy endures forever, a recurring refrain that underscores the unfailing, steadfast love of God. Despite the ups and downs of life, His loving‑kindness extends to every generation and circumstance, revealing His constant faithfulness to His people.

Reflecting on Psalm 136:7 invites believers to contemplate several points:

  • Recognizing God’s creative power – Marvel at the magnificence of the sun, moon, and stars, and consider the wonder of a Creator who can bring such lights into existence.
  • Gratitude for God’s mercy – Give thanks for the unwavering, everlasting mercy that has touched personal experience; express heartfelt gratitude for His faithfulness.
  • Trusting in God’s constancy – In times of difficulty or uncertainty, find reassurance in the unchanging nature of His love, relying on the promise that His mercy ends forever.
  • Praise and worship – Respond to the verse with adoration, using it as a springboard for prayer or a song of thanksgiving that acknowledges both God’s greatness as Creator and His enduring mercy.

In summary, Psalm 136:7 highlights God as the Creator of the great lights and emphasizes His mercy that ends forever. It calls us to reflect on His creative power, offer gratitude for His steadfast love, trust in His constant care, and respond with sincere praise and worship.
