Listen to this article

“With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: for his mercy endureth for ever.”

Context:Psalm 136 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise. It is often called the “Great Hallel” and is characterized by its repetitive structure, with each verse ending with the refrain, “for his mercy endureth for ever.” The psalm recounts God’s mighty acts of creation, deliverance, and provision for His people.

God’s strong hand and stretched out arm:In this verse, the psalmist refers to God’s intervention and deliverance with a strong hand and a stretched out arm. These phrases symbolize God’s power and might. In the Bible, the hand and arm of God are often associated with acts of judgment, deliverance, and salvation. It emphasizes that God is not only able to act but also willing to extend His power on behalf of His people.

God’s mercy endures forever:The phrase “for his mercy endureth for ever” is a recurring refrain throughout Psalm 136. It highlights one of the central themes of the psalm-the enduring and steadfast mercy of God. The psalmist recognizes that God’s mercy is not temporary or limited but extends throughout all generations. It is a reminder that God’s love, compassion, and forgiveness are unchanging and everlasting.

Psalm 136:12 reminds us of God’s strength, power, and mercy. It encourages us to reflect on the ways in which God has demonstrated His strength and mercy in our own lives. We can consider the times when God has delivered us from challenges, provided for our needs, and shown His faithfulness. It also prompts us to respond with gratitude and praise for His enduring mercy.

Additionally, this verse can serve as a source of comfort and encouragement during difficult times. It reminds us that God’s hand is strong, and His arm is stretched out to help us. We can find reassurance in knowing that His mercy is everlasting, and He is always ready to extend His grace and love to us.
