Listen to this article

“And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endureth for ever”

1. Context: Psalm 136 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise to God for His enduring mercy and steadfast love. The psalmist highlights various acts of God’s goodness and faithfulness throughout history, particularly focusing on the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land.

2. Passage Analysis:

– “And made Israel to pass through the midst of it”: This verse refers to God leading the people of Israel through the midst of a significant obstacle or challenge. The “it” here most likely refers to the Red Sea, which the Israelites crossed on dry ground as God parted the waters, allowing them to escape the pursuing Egyptian army (Exodus 14:21-31).

– “For his mercy endureth for ever”: The phrase “his mercy endureth for ever” is repeated after each verse in Psalm 136, emphasizing the everlasting and unfailing nature of God’s mercy. It serves as a refrain to remind the readers of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness throughout the psalm.

3. Lessons and Applications:

– God’s deliverance: The verse highlights God’s miraculous deliverance of the Israelites from bondage. It teaches us that God has the power to overcome any obstacle or challenge we may face. Just as He made a way for Israel through the Red Sea, He can make a way for us in our difficulties.

– God’s enduring mercy: The phrase “for his mercy endureth for ever” emphasizes the eternal nature of God’s mercy. It reminds us that His love and compassion are unwavering, even in the face of our failures and shortcomings. We can take comfort in knowing that God’s mercy is always available to us.

– Gratitude and praise: Psalm 136 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise. It encourages us to express gratitude to God for His mighty acts and enduring mercy. We can cultivate a heart of thanksgiving by acknowledging God’s faithfulness in our lives and praising Him for His goodness.

4. Application in Christian life:

– Trust in God’s provision: When faced with challenges or obstacles, we can trust that God will make a way for us. Just as He guided the Israelites through the Red Sea, He will provide guidance and help us overcome difficulties.

– Remember God’s mercy: We should always remember that God’s mercy is everlasting. In times of doubt or discouragement, we can find comfort in His unfailing love and seek His forgiveness and grace.

– Cultivate a heart of gratitude: Regularly expressing gratitude to God helps us focus on His goodness and faithfulness. By counting our blessings and acknowledging His mercy, we can cultivate a heart of praise and thanksgiving.
