Psalms 142:3
When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.

Psalm 142 is a contemplative psalm, called a “Maschil,” written by David while he hid in a cave, likely during King Saul’s pursuit (1 Samuel 22:1). David’s spirit was overwhelmed, faint, and ready to sink under affliction. Yet in that moment he turned to God, pouring out his heart in prayer. This psalm is a lament, an honest cry from a man who felt trapped and alone.
Meaning
When David says his spirit was overwhelmed, he describes deep distress, anxiety, and sorrow that many believers also face. The Hebrew word for snare (pach) means a hidden trap, emphasizing that enemies set dangers secretly on his path. In contrast, God knew his path—God’s knowledge is complete and intimate, even when we are unaware of hidden threats. The secrecy of the enemy’s action highlights the greatness of God’s awareness. Nothing escapes His sight.
