Psalms 144:12

That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:

Psalms 144:12 (KJV)

Psalm 144 is a prayer of King David for deliverance, protection, and victory over enemies. In verse twelve, David turns his heart toward the next generation, asking God to bless the young people of his community.

David compares sons to “plants grown up in their youth.” This picture shows young men maturing in a healthy, fruitful way, growing in wisdom, character, and skill. He compares daughters to “corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace.” Corner stones were essential for a building’s stability and alignment. The polishing suggests beauty, dignity, and careful refinement.

These two images together show that both sons and daughters are valuable. Sons are to be strong and productive, while daughters are to be graceful and stable. Both contribute to the strength and beauty of the whole community.

This blessing is part of a larger prayer for God’s favor. The flourishing of children is a sign of God’s blessing on His people, as seen in Psalm 127:3, where children are called a heritage from the Lord.

Believers today can pray for the younger generation with the same heart. We can ask God to help young men and women grow in faith, character, and skill. We can also invest time and encouragement in their lives, helping them become people who bring stability and beauty to their families and churches.

This verse reminds us that the health of a community depends on how it nurtures its youth. When children are raised in godly ways, they become like strong plants and polished stones, honoring God and blessing others.
