Psalms 144:12
That our sonnes may be as plants growen vp in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace: Psalms 144:12 (KJV)
Psalm 144 is attributed to King David and is a prayer for deliverance, protection, and victory over enemies. In verse twelve David expresses a heartfelt desire for the flourishing and strength of the young generation in his community—both his sons and his daughters.
David likens his sons to “plants grown up in their youth.” This image conveys a wish that children mature in a healthy and fruitful manner, growing tall and strong like well‑tended plants. The comparison implies a hope that young men develop wisdom, character, and skill, becoming pillars of strength for the nation.
For his daughters David uses the metaphor of “corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace.” In ancient architecture cornerstones were essential for the stability and alignment of an entire building. By calling his daughters cornerstones, David highlights the crucial role of women in providing stability and strength to families and the wider community. The added description of being “polished after the similitude of a palace” stresses the need for refinement, beauty, and dignity, reflecting both external elegance and inner character.
Together these images form a prayerful vision that the youth be nurtured to fulfill their God‑given potential. The verse calls believers to guide and support the younger generation so that sons may become capable and strong, while daughters embody grace, stability, and refined conduct. In doing so, the community benefits from a generation that contributes positively to society and honors God’s design for each person.
