Psalms 148:4

Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.

Psalms 148:4 (KJV)

Psalm 148 is a hymn that calls all creation to praise the Lord. The first six verses address the heavens, including angels, the sun, the moon, and the stars. Verse 4 focuses on the highest heavens and the waters above them. The second half of the psalm turns to the earth, calling sea creatures, weather, mountains, trees, animals, and people to join the same song. This structure shows that praise is not limited to one part of creation; it spans the whole universe.

The phrase “heavens of heavens” means the highest heavens, the dwelling place of God and His angels. It points to the vastness of God’s rule beyond the visible sky. The “waters that be above the heavens” reflect the ancient understanding of waters stored above the sky, as described in Genesis 1:6-7, where God separated the waters above from the waters below. This imagery shows that even the most distant and exalted parts of creation are called to praise their Maker. The verse invites us to see that nothing is outside God’s reach or His call to worship.

Genesis 1:6-7 helps explain the waters above the heavens. There, God creates a firmament to divide the waters, showing His power over the whole universe. Psalm 148:5-6 adds that God commanded creation into being and established it forever. So the call to praise is not just poetry; it is a response to God’s sovereign creative power. The psalm also echoes the broader biblical theme that all creation exists to glorify its Creator, as seen in other praise psalms.

This verse reminds us that every level of creation, from the highest heavens to the earth, exists to glorify God. We are part of that creation. When we praise God, we join the cosmic chorus that includes angels and the waters above. Our worship is not an isolated act but a participation in the praise that fills the universe. This truth can shape our daily lives, turning our ordinary moments into acts of worship.

Consider the greatness of God, who rules over the highest heavens and the waters above them. If even these majestic parts of creation praise Him, how much more should we, who are made in His image, offer our thanks and honor? Let this verse encourage you to praise God with awe and joy, knowing that your voice joins the song of all creation. Take time today to thank Him for His power and to add your voice to the chorus.
