Beastes and all cattell: creeping things, and flying foule. Psalms 148:10 (KJV)

Psalm 148 is a hymn of praise to God, calling all creation to join in praising Him. The psalmist urges various elements of creation, including angels, celestial bodies, and the forces of nature, to praise God. In verse 10, the focus shifts to include all living creatures on earth.

The inclusiveness of God’s praise: The verse begins with the words “beasts” and “cattle,” which encompass the wide range of land‑dwelling animals. It then mentions “creeping things,” referring to small creatures that crawl on the ground, such as insects and reptiles. Finally, “flying fowl” includes birds and other flying creatures.

God’s sovereignty over all creation: This verse highlights the comprehensive nature of God’s creation. It acknowledges that all living creatures, from the largest to the smallest, are under God’s authority and subject to His creative design. It demonstrates God’s ownership and control over the diverse forms of life He has brought into existence.

Lessons from the verse:

Equality in God’s eyes: The verse reminds us that God values all forms of life. Every creature, regardless of its size or appearance, has a place in God’s creation and a role to fulfill. This understanding should lead us to treat all living beings with respect and care.

Appreciating God’s creativity: The verse prompts us to marvel at the vast array of living creatures God has made. Each creature reflects His wisdom and creativity, showcasing the beauty and diversity of His creation. It encourages us to observe and appreciate the intricate details of the natural world.

Participation in praise: Just as all creation is called to praise God, this verse reminds us that we, as humans, have a responsibility to join in that praise. As we recognize God’s sovereignty over all living beings, we should respond with worship and gratitude for His marvelous works.

Application:

Environmental stewardship: Recognizing that all living creatures are part of God’s creation should motivate us to care for the environment and the welfare of animals. We should strive to be responsible stewards of the earth and protect the delicate balance of ecosystems.

Humility and gratitude: Contemplating the vastness and diversity of God’s creation should humble us and remind us of our place in the world. It should foster gratitude in our hearts as we recognize God’s goodness in providing for the needs of every living creature.

Joining the chorus of praise: Just as the psalmist calls all of creation to praise God, we should actively participate in worship and acknowledge God’s greatness. Whether through prayer, singing, or acts of service, we can express our gratitude and praise to God for His wonderful works.
