Proverbs 1:28
Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
Proverbs 1:28 (KJV)
Context
Proverbs is wisdom literature, traditionally tied to King Solomon. This verse closes a warning passage where Wisdom is pictured as a person calling to the simple and scornful, but they refuse to listen (Proverbs 1:20-27). The call is urgent, yet the response is neglect.
Meaning
The verse describes a future time of distress when those who rejected Wisdom’s call will themselves call out, yet they will not be answered. The Hebrew phrase “seek me early” means to seek diligently, but even such seeking will fail. The reason is given in the next verses: they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:29-31). Their persistent rejection has made them unable to find the help they now desire. This is a sobering warning about the danger of delaying response to God’s call.
Biblical connections
This warning does not teach that God refuses to forgive a repentant sinner at any time. Rather, it shows that a lifestyle of stubbornly ignoring wisdom leads to a state where one’s own choices block the way back. The “me” in the verse is Wisdom personified, closely linked to God’s own wisdom. In the New Testament, Christ is “made unto us wisdom” (1 Corinthians 1:30), and through Him believers find grace and restoration when they repent in faith. The contrast is clear: whoever hearkens to wisdom “shall dwell securely, and shall be quiet without fear of evil” (Proverbs 1:33).
Application
The verse calls us to respond to wisdom today, not to delay. Those who despise counsel in times of peace will not find it in times of trouble. Therefore, we must choose the fear of the Lord and value His knowledge now. When distress comes, those who have walked with Him will find Him near.
Reflection
This is a sobering reminder of the reality of reaping what we sow. Yet it also carries an implicit call to turn back while there is still time. Let us heed wisdom’s voice now, so that when distress comes, we may find the Lord and rest in His secure care.
