Proverbs 1:20

Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

Proverbs 1:20 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed mainly to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance for living a righteous and successful life. Proverbs 1 begins with an introduction to the purpose and benefits of the book, emphasizing the pursuit of wisdom and understanding. This verse marks a turning point: the father’s private instruction to his son (Proverbs 1:8-19) now gives way to wisdom’s public call to everyone.

In Proverbs 1:20, wisdom is personified as a woman who cries out in public places. The Hebrew word for wisdom, “chokmah,” is feminine, which explains the female picture. This personification shows that wisdom is not hidden or obscure but actively seeks to make itself known. The word “crieth” means a loud, persistent call. Wisdom is not silent or passive; she urgently tries to capture people’s attention. The verse says she cries “without,” meaning outside, and utters her voice “in the streets.” These are places of commerce, community, and daily life. This imagery indicates that wisdom is not limited to special places or reserved for a select few. Instead, it proclaims its message openly and is accessible to all who are willing to listen and seek it.

Wisdom’s public cry in the streets points to God’s initiative in revealing truth to everyone. This public call also foreshadows Christ, who is described as the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24) and who taught openly in the streets and synagogues (John 18:20). Just as wisdom calls out in Proverbs, Jesus publicly invited people to hear and follow him. The following verses in Proverbs 1:21-33 show that wisdom’s call can be rejected, leading to calamity. This connection reminds readers that responding to wisdom’s voice is a serious matter.

Proverbs 1:20 invites us to consider how we respond to wisdom’s call in our own lives. Wisdom is available to everyone, not just the intellectual elite. It can be found in ordinary situations and interactions. The urgency of the cry means we should not neglect its counsel. Practical responses include:

  • Awareness: Cultivate an awareness of wisdom’s presence in everyday life, through Scripture, godly mentors, life experiences, and observing consequences.

  • Attentiveness: Pay attention to wisdom’s voice amidst the noise and distractions of the world. Be open-minded, humble, and willing to receive instruction and correction.

  • Pursuit: Actively seek wisdom through intentional study, reflection, and godly counsel. Make it a priority to acquire knowledge, discernment, and understanding.

  • Response: When wisdom’s call is heard, align your life with its teachings. Apply wisdom to daily choices, relationships, and actions.

Wisdom’s cry in the streets is both an invitation and a warning. It invites us to listen and learn, but it also warns that ignoring wisdom has consequences. God’s wisdom is not obscure; it is actively calling out to humanity. The question is whether we will hear and respond with humility and teachability.
