Proverbs 7:1

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, written primarily by King Solomon. It contains practical advice and teachings for righteous living. Proverbs 7 specifically deals with the topic of avoiding the seduction of an adulterous woman.

Addressed to the son:The verse begins with the phrase “My son,” indicating that the instruction is directed towards a young person, often seen as a representation of a learner or disciple. It highlights the importance of heeding the words of wisdom being shared.

Keeping God’s words:The verse encourages the son to “keep” the words and “lay up” the commandments. This implies that the teachings of wisdom are not meant to be casually heard and forgotten but rather to be treasured and stored in one’s heart. It emphasizes the importance of internalizing and remembering God’s instructions.

Obedience and commitment:“Keep my words” implies not only understanding but also obeying God’s commandments. It goes beyond mere intellectual knowledge and requires a deliberate choice to follow and live according to God’s wisdom.

The significance of commandments:In biblical language, commandments refer to God’s moral and ethical instructions given to guide His people. They provide a framework for righteous living and are intended for our benefit and protection. The verse encourages the son to value and cherish these commandments, recognizing their importance in shaping his character and behavior.

Personal application:While Proverbs 7:1 specifically addresses a father’s instruction to his son, we can extend the principle to apply to all believers. As followers of God, we are called to keep His words and commandments, treasuring them in our hearts and allowing them to guide our actions and decisions.

Practical implications:To keep God’s words and commandments, we must first seek to know and understand them. This involves reading and studying the Bible regularly, meditating on its teachings, and seeking God’s wisdom through prayer. It also requires a willingness to obey God’s instructions and align our lives with His standards of righteousness.
