Proverbs 7:1
My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
Proverbs 7:1 (KJV)
Context
Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature, written mainly by King Solomon. It gives practical advice for righteous living. Proverbs 7 warns against the seduction of an adulterous woman. This verse opens that warning with a father’s call to his son.
Meaning
The phrase “My son,” shows a father teaching his child. In Proverbs, this address often represents a learner or disciple. The father urges the son to “keep” his words and “lay up” his commandments. To keep means to guard and obey. To lay up means to store something valuable, like treasure. The son must not hear wisdom and forget it. He must hide it in his heart and treat it as precious.
The parallel between “words” and “commandments” is important. Words refer to the father’s teaching, while commandments are God’s moral and ethical instructions. Both must be received and obeyed. This is not mere knowledge. It is a deliberate choice to follow God’s wisdom in daily life.
Biblical connections
This verse prepares the reader for the rest of Proverbs 7, which shows the danger of ignoring wisdom. The call to treasure commandments also connects to the broader theme of valuing God’s law as a guide for life. In Deuteronomy 6:6, God’s words are to be upon the heart. Here, the father repeats that same need for internalizing divine instruction.
Application
Although the verse addresses a son, the principle applies to every believer. We are called to keep God’s words and commandments. This begins with reading and studying the Bible regularly. It continues with meditating on its teachings and praying for understanding. Then we must obey what we learn, allowing God’s standards to shape our character and decisions.
Reflection
Consider how you treat God’s commandments. Do you hear them and quickly forget? Or do you store them like treasure? When wisdom is hidden in the heart, it guards us against temptation. It gives us strength to choose what is right. Let this verse encourage you to value God’s words above all else, so that they guide your steps every day.
