Proverbs 7:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:10

“Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.”

Context and Background: The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature in the Bible, attributed primarily to King Solomon. It contains practical teachings and advice for living a wise and righteous life. Proverbs 7:2 is part of a larger section in which Solomon addresses his son, imparting wisdom to him.

Understanding the Verse:

“Keep my commandments”: This phrase emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s commandments. Throughout the Bible, God reveals His commandments as guidelines for righteous living. By keeping His commandments, we demonstrate our love for God and acknowledge His authority in our lives.

“And live”: Obedience to God’s commandments leads to life, both in a physical and spiritual sense. The wisdom found in God’s Word enables us to make right choices and avoid the destructive consequences of sinful actions. It is a call to a life that is pleasing to God and beneficial for ourselves and others.

“And my law as the apple of thine eye”: The “apple of the eye” is a metaphor for something precious and cherished. Here, it refers to God’s law or His Word. Just as we instinctively protect our eyes because they are valuable, we are to treasure and protect God’s law in our hearts. It implies valuing, internalizing, and guarding His instructions.

Key Lessons and Applications:

Obedience and Life: God’s commandments are given for our benefit. When we obey them, we experience true life and avoid the destructive paths that sin leads to. The way of wisdom is to submit to God’s authority and follow His guidance in all areas of life.

The Preciousness of God’s Word: God’s law is not to be taken lightly but regarded as precious and valuable. It should be treasured, studied, and meditated upon. By internalizing God’s Word, we equip ourselves with wisdom and discernment for making godly choices.

Guarding God’s Law: It is important to protect God’s Word from being diluted or compromised by the values and ideologies of the world. By guarding His commandments, we ensure that they remain central in our lives and guide our thoughts, words, and actions.

Relationship with God: Keeping God’s commandments is an expression of our love and devotion to Him. It strengthens our relationship with God and deepens our understanding of His character. Obedience is a vital aspect of our walk with Him.
