Proverbs 7:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:10
Listen to this article

“Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger passage in Proverbs 7 that serves as a warning against the seductive nature of an adulterous woman. The passage emphasizes the importance of wisdom and understanding in resisting temptation and making righteous choices. In verse 4, the author urges the reader to personify wisdom as a sister and understanding as a close relative.

This poetic language encourages a deep, intimate relationship with wisdom and understanding. By considering wisdom as a sister and understanding as a kinswoman, the verse emphasizes their familial bond, promoting the idea that we should value and cherish these qualities as dearly as we would our own family members. The use of familial terms in this context also highlights the significance of wisdom and understanding in our lives. Just as we rely on our family for support, guidance, and protection, wisdom and understanding play similar roles in guiding us away from harmful paths and toward a righteous and virtuous life.

The verse suggests that we should have a personal connection and familiarity with wisdom and understanding. This connection implies an ongoing relationship that requires cultivation and nurture. It encourages us to actively seek wisdom and understanding in our lives, to embrace their teachings, and to apply them in our decision‑making processes.

In a broader context, the book of Proverbs presents wisdom as an attribute to be pursued diligently. It repeatedly emphasizes the benefits and blessings that come from living wisely and heeding the counsel of God. By personifying wisdom and understanding in familial terms, the author reinforces the idea that they are not mere abstract concepts but rather living entities that can profoundly impact our lives.

In conclusion, Proverbs 7:4 calls upon us to develop a deep and intimate relationship with wisdom and understanding. By treating wisdom as a sister and understanding as a kinswoman, we are encouraged to value and cherish these qualities in our lives. It reminds us of the importance of actively seeking wisdom, applying it to our decisions, and allowing it to guide us on the path of righteousness.
