Listen to this article

That they may keepe thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words. Proverbs 7:5 (KJV)

To keep thee from the strange woman, from the flattery of her tongue, who hath a perverse mouth and a smooth tongue. Understanding the background and context of a verse is crucial for interpretation. Proverbs 7 is written as a fatherly instruction to a son, warning him against the enticing and seductive words of an adulterous woman. The aim is to guide the son towards wisdom, integrity, and moral uprightness. Proverbs is a book of wisdom found in the Old Testament, attributed primarily to King Solomon. It contains practical advice on various aspects of life, including relationships, morality, and wise decision‑making. In Proverbs 7, the focus is on the danger of adultery and the importance of maintaining fidelity in marriage.

Identifying the key themes, the verse speaks of the need to guard oneself against the allure of a “strange woman,” emphasizing fidelity and faithfulness. It warns about the deceptive nature of the woman who uses flattering, smooth words to entice others, highlighting the danger of falling for empty promises and insincere gestures.

The “strange woman” or “stranger” mentioned in this verse can be understood as a symbol representing any person or influence that tempts us away from godly principles or fidelity in relationships. The mention of flattery serves as a reminder that people may use manipulative tactics to draw us away from what is right, urging us to be discerning and cautious when faced with enticing words or false promises.

Practical application calls believers to maintain fidelity in relationships, remaining steadfast in commitments, especially in marriage, and to avoid engaging in extramarital affairs or unfaithful behavior. It also urges vigilance against deceptive influences, encouraging discernment when confronted with smooth, flattering speech. Finally, it stresses the value of seeking wisdom and guidance by immersing oneself in God’s Word, cultivating a relationship with Him, and relying on His wisdom to navigate life’s complexities.

Remember, when studying a specific verse, it is essential to consider its surrounding verses and the larger context of the biblical book to gain a comprehensive understanding of the message being conveyed.
